Urgent Conservation:
Protect Honduran Biodiversity
A Global Biodiversity Hotspot in Crisis
Honduras, a jewel within the Mesoamerican Biodiversity Hotspot, is home to an extraordinary variety of reptiles and amphibians, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. The ecosystems they inhabit are not only essential to the wildlife they support but also for the health and livelihoods of local communities.
A Race Against Deforestation
The country faces one of the world’s highest deforestation rates, losing a staggering 25% of its primary humid forest over the past two decades.* With deforestation accelerating each year, the habitats that sustain Honduras’ unique species are disappearing at an alarming rate.
* According to Global Forest Watch
Promoting Harmony Between People and Wildlife in Honduras.
Through our work with farmers and ranchers, school children, local governments, and other NGOs, we are empowering communities to reap the sustainability, health, and economic benefits of biodiversity conservation. Moreover, we are combatting stigma against reptiles and amphibians through education, which is fostering an appreciation for these animals as emblems of Honduran heritage.
Our Organization
HonduHerp is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving the biodiversity of Honduras, with a focus on reptiles, amphibians, and their habitats. We accomplish this in three ways: protecting land, engaging communities, and conducting scientific research.

Featured Reserves
Reserva Tierra del Tamagás:
Copán, Honduras
Reserva Tierra del Tamagás preserves over 30 hectares of pristine cloud forest in southwestern Honduras. Established in 2023, this reserve is a lifeline for both wildlife and people, providing clean water to three communities for drinking and farming. It is home to a remarkably dense population of jade palm pit vipers (Bothriechis thalassinus), an endangered species that persists only in virgin cloud forests. This reserve marks the first step in our planned “Thalassinus Corridor”, which will link critical habitats for cloud forest endemic species across the range of the jade palm pit viper.
